I'm Just a Chick Chillin' on Mama's Back

On August 22, it started to finally cool of and RAIN. In my neck of the woods it gets to 100+, so it was a relief to the hens (and myself) when we had a huge thunderstorm. As you can see, Topaz, my white Brahma hen, is covered in wet dirt that she rolled in. I'm happy because it's cooled because that will mean more chicks hatching without problems. Anyway, the hens are picking at corn and loving it as much as I did. One of the chicks are perched on the mother's back, also called the "saddle," and sometimes they will sleep on top of the mother. The three gold chicks, the one on the mother and two in the back, are from my Buff Orpington Rooster I sold while back. We had a Silver Lace Wyandotte rooster as well, but he too was sold and not paying the hens much attention. Most of the chicks will be sold once they mature and lay eggs, or if they end up being males. Some of the males will be culled and eaten as well. I plan to keep the gold ones, thought. They are so cute! The chicks are three weeks old here.
